While many employees will be rejoicing after the FIFA World Cup kicked off in South Africa, for many employers the tournament signifies distracted employees and disruption to their businesses. Widespread ''sickness'' absence during the tournament is anticipated, particularly on days that coincide with England matches. Employees of different nationalities may also find their countries pitted against one another during the tournament, which could lead to workplace tension.
